I remember a time in my childhood where two of our female Dalmation dogs had puppies within days of one another. The one had nine puppies and one had eight, and they all lived. When we counted them we had 23 dogs on the property. It was delightful for us as children, but hard work for my mother. We had to take turns trying to keep the two mothers from visiting the other ones puppies, and then still as they grew older trying to stop them from getting out of their little pen we made. We had really come to love each one of them, so it was very sad when the time came when we had to find homes for all of them. This is when we come to realize that dogs are our companions, our shadow and our friend, and why so many people enjoy collecting dog figurines.

Dogs have been an inspiration to many artists. My mother is also an artist. She used to sit down with her drawing book and make sketches of the dogs on the farm. It was what brought her pleasure and watching her enjoy creation was a big part of our life. They were beautiful but very fragile, so I was not allowed to play with them, just look at them and admire them. This is when I learnt to appreciate the value of art. Later I started collecting figurines made of glass, crystal, brass and pewter. I was proud of my collection. Eventually my friends and family would buy me dog figurines for my birthday and any other occasion until my collection grew so large I didn’t know what to do with them all.

We love our pets. Lots of us offer our pets the prized place on the bed or couch. Most of us buy our pets Christmas presents. Many of us have a harder time watching an animal die in a Hollywood film than the main character. But is it going a bit overboard when we start collecting figurines of our pets?

I say, “no.” We have photographs all over the house of our loved ones, why shouldn’t we have figurines of our pets? Of course, this is easy for me to say, and perhaps it is even a little defensive. Why? Because I have over a hundred dog figurines (a 101, to be exact!). To any “normal” person, that many dog figurines may seem like an absurd amount. Of course, to any collector, it sounds like a relatively small number.

You may wonder how I got started collecting dog figurines. Well, to be quite honest, it did not start out as a collection. In fact, when my beloved soft-coated wheaton terrier, Sadie O’Grady, died, I got a terrier figurine to place upon her urn. Somehow, I found it comforting to see the likeness of Sadie – even if it was in miniature.

My dogless days did not last long. I went out and brought myself home a puppy the very next week. I decided to stick within the terrier group, but I bought a miniature schnauzer, Woogie, instead of another Wheaton. One day, when I was out shopping at a garage sale, I found a dog figurine that looked almost exactly like my Woogie. Of course I had to buy it. After that day, I made a point of finding and buying any dog figurine that resembled Woogie. It was like a sort of happy pastime.

Soon, I started receiving schnauzer figurines every birthday and Christmas from my friends and family. I even received mug sets, t-shirts, pajamas, slippers, and other items, as well. After a while, people started sending me figurines representing other breeds, as well.

I started to display may dog figurines in a beautiful lit-up hatch. But they were soon cluttering it up, and I decided that I had had enough dog figurines for one lifetime. Of course, it was too late. My friends and family had already gotten too use to sending me a dog figurine or other dog paraphernalia for every holiday and birthday. It made their shopping easy.

I had never planned on starting a collection of dog figurines. Sometimes, it seems that a collection is something that other people choose for you. At least, this is how I felt. After Woogie died, though, I decided to put an end to my collection.

I thanked my friends and family for sending me so many beautiful dog figurines over the years, and then I told them to never do it again! To prove my point, I took the majority of my figurines – all but my most cherished 101 – to a neighborhood yard sale. All but a few of them sold, and those I donated to charity.

With the money that I made, I went out and bought myself another puppy, Shasta Daisy. I find that a true dog lover prefers the company of her dog over that of a few figurines. I still display my 101 dog figurines in the hatch, but that is where they will remain as Shasta Daisy and I take a walk off into the sunset.

The true value of your figurine can only be measured in terms of how much you care for it. As a result, the more you care for it the more value it could have.

But regardless of how you determine your figurine’s value, below are some guidelines that will not only protect its value but could increase it as well.

• Keep it clean. In most cases just simple dusting is all that is required. When washing is necessary I suggest using tepid water and a mild soap or detergent (such as baby shampoo). Use a soft cloth to wash the figurine and a soft brush or Q-Tip to get into small nooks and crevices. To avoid crazing, never allow water to get inside of your figurine. Rinse the figurine using a soft cloth that’s been dipped in warm clear water. Allow the figurine to air dry.

• Display it with caution. Never expose your figurine to direct sunlight. The sun’s rays can cause discoloration as well as distortion and deterioration.

• Make sure its display foundation is secured. Never place your figurine near the edge of the display area. • Avoid exposing it to extreme temperature changes. Also avoid putting your figurine in areas with high moisture levels or rapid temperature changes.

Storytelling is something many of us aspire too. Through my life i've know many amateur storytellers including my mother and father. They used to tell fantastic stories when I was young, and many times used props such as a dragon figurines or other types of collectible crystal figurines to to animate the stories. For a young child it was awesome!

Figurines are amazing gift and collectors items. Sometimes referred to as dolls or small statues, they can make amazing home decorative or collectibles display pieces for any home or office, school etc.

Theme Your Crystal Figurine Collection

After a few years of collecting crystal figurines your display shelf or curio cabinet can begin to look cluttered or disorganized. A good way to solve this problem is to theme your collection.

Here are a few simple tips that will make your display dazzle with interest. Look over your crystal figurines and identify those figurines that have something in common. For example, you might have a crystal elephant, a horse on a ball, and a clown. The theme here would be a circus.

If your crystal figurine collection is comprised of all animals, view them as farm animals, forest animals, jungle animals, zoo animals and build a cluster of figurines in these groups. Dolphins, oysters, starfish, lighthouses and sailboats create an ocean theme. The different themes are limited only by the figurines in your collection and your imagination.

Some collectors focus on one category of figurines such as butterflies or frogs or dogs. In this case, you can theme by manufacturer, color, size, style or artistic value. Each of these themes can be made attractive and interesting.

Collectors who have only a few crystal figurines can combine two or three figurines together in a group. Placing a crystal butterfly next to a crystal rose figurine is a nice touch, or placing a frog under a mushroom works nicely. Think about relationships and you’ll come up with lots of ideas and combinations.

The best time to reorganize your crystal collection is the day you clean and dust your display. As you remove the figurines, place them on a large table in the appropriate groupings you have identified. Once all the crystal figurines are on the table, you have plenty of room to rearrange each grouping according to size and eye appeal.

Spend some time on this activity to get the best visual effect that you can. Does the grouping look better with the figurines facing each other or all facing in the same direction. But what do you do if all the figurines are about the same size? Try placing small, clear plastic stands of varying heights to raise the figurines in the back of the grouping. Varying heights adds interest and focus to the theme. You may have to do some searching for the plastic stands. Try arts and crafts shops and collectible stores.

Avoid using solid material for stands in a lighted curio cabinet. It will block some of the light filtering down through the figurines and glass shelving and create unwanted shadows. Figurine displays on a solid wood shelf or in a bookcase would not be affected by solid or colored stands. Just remember, under certain lighting conditions, crystal figurines will pick up and reflect the colors around them. Is that an effect that you want?

Now that you have all your theme groups laid out and adjusted for height, you can begin placing them back in the display cabinet or on the shelf. When the display area is completed, stand back and visually check each theme group. Can you see all of the figurines in the group? Can you immediately identify the theme? Make your final adjustments and you’re finished. Sit back and enjoy your beautiful crystal figurine collection.
